The Tower of the Elephant 4
- THE TOWER OF THE ELEPHANT, 4 - A black ink and black color pencil on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in, "THE TOWER OF THE ELEPHANT," my art folio based on a story by Robert E. Howard, and published by Bortner and Kruse in 1977.
Shortly before I started to work on this drawing I thought about all the "composition" lessons that I had read about in my Andrew Loomis art instruction books; all the geometric patterns that can be associated with any work of art.
So when I started to work on this drawing I decided to lay out a geometrical pattern to use for my composition. I began with the basics; I drew a vertical line from top to bottom about a third of way in from the left side of the paper. Then I drew a horizontal line from the left side of the paper to the right side, about a third of the way up from the bottom. And finally, I drew a diagonal line from the upper right corner to the bottom left corner.
If you can, imagine those pencil lines on this drawing. You will see that I placed all the objects to the left of the vertical line, and below the horizontal line. I then placed Conan along the diagonal line.
I seldom contained a drawing so strictly within a geometrical layout, but they are supposed to produce compositions that are naturally comfortable to the viewing eye, so I tried it. And it seems to be true, they "Feel" right.
